Translation from Russian into English the text of “Paschal Epistle 2006” from Archbishop Antony (Orloff) of Los Angeles, South America and Eastern Canada, Vice-Chairman of the Hierarchical Synod of the First Hierarch of the Russain Orhtodox Church Abroad.

“Christ is Risen!” + “Truly He is Risen!”

PASHAL EPISTLE 2006

Christ is Risen!—exclaimed Saint Mary Magdalene to the Lord’s disciples.

The world will always remember who was the first to deliver the news of Christ’s Resurrection, the equal to whom it has never known and will not know unto the ages.

But the world has forgotten that Christ’s Resurrection was not only His own Resurrection, but also the resurrection of His disciples.

With the Lord’s Resurrection, great moral strength began to shine within them, which recreated them, and revived the whole world with a flooding of grace and rebirth.

“Arise and walk!” resounded the apostolic voice to a much weakened world. And the world stood up and walked, glorifying and praising God.

Now more than 2,000 years have passed and the little flock of Christ’s followers has turned into a multi-million number of Christians.

But all of these millions of Christians are no longer His first disciples who were pure in heart.

Only a small group, just like the first Christian fellowship, a tight circle to this day gathers round the Risen One and joyously and purely answers Saint Mary with “Truly He is Risen!” It is these who have remained true to Christ.

The majority of them repeat the words of the minority, but only with words, not with their whole heart.

The majority wants to become bigger, having gotten accustomed more to pleasing people, than God and cannot stop on their slippery path; they are heading toward unification with those whose leaders of the church in 1946 named Stalin “The Chosen One of the Lord.” Such an affirmation by Alexei I Simansky commits blasphemy against Almighty God Himself.

It is these about whom the Lord said: who have given the dead to bury their own dead [Matthew 8:22].

The call to life and light does not reach them; their hearts have become stone.

And from their lips “Truly He is Risen!” sounds lifeless and dead. They do not feel Christ within themselves. Not only that, but they also hate Russia and the Russian people. They have rejected Christ and gone over to the enemies’ side and by their actions cry out: “Crucify, crucify Him!”

According to many canonical laws, all of the so-called hierarchs of the Moscow Patriarchate (M.P) who are made up of KGB agents, are apostates against Christ. Apostolic Canon 62 subjects apostates to defrocking, and if they repent, does not allow their title to be restored, but accepts them back only as laymen. Similar orders are found in the numerous 24 canons. From this we can see that the sacred canons do not recognize grace from apostates, that is from the hierarchs of the Moscow patriarchate - from KGB agents. (1)

Just as then the little known disciples of Christ, neither fearing their sworn enemies, nor the living dead, carried the joyous cry to the whole world: “Christ is Risen!”, and conquered an arrogant world, so in our era the successors of Christ, beginning with the present thriving Most Blessed Metropolitan Vitaly and all those who truly believe in His Resurrection—must not be deterred by the evil cries of the infidel, nor by the shrewd businessmen of this world—and must loudly and joyously carry everywhere the proclamation of Saint Mary: “Christ is Risen!”

We must remember the following: (2)
1.The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad is not a “jurisdiction” nor “the local church abroad”, but the true Orthodox Church of Russia;
2.The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad is the guardian of the spiritual life of undistorted Russian Orthodoxy;
3.The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad is not “part of the Russian Church”, equivalent to the Moscow Patriarchate, but is the entirety of the Russian Church, which has preserved the apostolic legitimacy;
4.The Moscow Patriarchate is a Soviet institution without grace, into which the Episcopate of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad under Laurus is striving to merge.

How long will the mausoleum still remain in Red Square? In a telegram to Gorbachev, congratulating him with the New Year, the M.P.’s Patriarch Pimen writes: “We want to express our deep gratitude for your constant attention toward the needs of a believing people, for all that is done by you for the restoration of Leninist standards in relations between the Church and the Government.” (3) The praise of Leninist “standards” for a Christian is just as absurd as someone deciding to praise the standards of Nero or Diocletius in the treatment of the Christians of ancient Rome.

The M. P. is subject to the ecclesiastical tribunal, and there cannot be any dialog with them whatsoever; with them it is appropriate to carry on only an accusatory monologue from the prosecution. Their place is on the bench of the convicted. After the ecclesiastical tribunal and removal of any clerical rank from its members, they must be turned over to the criminal courts, i.e .to arrange a Nuremburg Trial of them for all their condemnations and serious crimes.

The Russian Church Abroad is a tiny island amidst the raging ocean of world apostasy.
Both in the Motherland and abroad, we must rally around worthy shepherds led by Most Blessed Metropolitan Vitaly, the legitimate successor to three Metropolitans abroad, these uncompromised champions against the servants of the devil. The same fate in its time befell also the Most Blessed Metropolitan Antony Khrapovitsky. While bending under the immensurable weight of his cross, the Metropolitan said that it would be easier for him to share the lot of the exiled hierarchs and live to the end of his life in one of the Soviet concentration camps, than to see how the enemies of the Church tear apart with their discord, dissension and treason the Garments of Christ, our long-suffering Russian Orthodox Church Abroad.

Russian people in the Motherland and in the diaspora, do not be lukewarm. Surround our Spiritual Father Metropolitan Vitaly in a tight circle, defending and standing firmly behind him. Have courage! Your cry will awaken those “dead hierarchs”, and they will come to life in spirit, they will understand that you cannot be a Christian and live only for yourself, that you cannot call yourself a disciple of the Risen One and for your own benefit in every way enslave your spiritual children and see in them not brothers to Christ, but only the material necessary for building up your own fortune.

It is this cry of victory which will drown out the evil hissing of the enemies of Christ, and they will vanish, as smoke vanishes.

Christ is Risen!

This is truth.

But truth always conquers.

Then there can be no other answer from pure hearts to the exclamation of Saint Mary, than only: “Truly He is Risen!”

Prayerfully greeting our flock, our spiritual children with the Bright Holiday of Christ’s Resurrection. May Christ dwell in our hearts, He Who is our joy, truth, light , consolation, victory and resurrection of our souls toward a pure life in God.
